Strategic Relationship-Building

Logo: Eastern Washington University

Session Description

Professional development shouldn’t feel like an obligation — but staying connected to the field shouldn’t be optional either.

This interactive session reframes “networking” as strategic relationship-building: a leadership skill that helps you navigate complexity, reduce professional isolation, and move work forward across campus.

Grounded in research on social capital, mattering, developmental networks, and communities of practice, Dr. Ahlquist offers a practical framework for building a supported professional community — within EWU Student Affairs, across campus partners, digitally, and across the field. Through a facilitated panel with EWU Student Affairs leaders and guided reflection, participants will craft a clear, values-aligned action plan for staying engaged over the next 12–18 months in ways that fit their role, capacity, and season.
