Joe Sabado // Student-Centered Approach to IT, Leading with an Attitude of Gratitude & Studying the Meaning of Tech

There is more than hardware, software, and programming to Information Technology (IT). On paper, Joe Sabado is the Executive Director and Associate Chief Information Officer at UC Santa Barbara, but he refers to himself as an advocate for student success using technology, as an educator, and a mentor. Joe Sabado shares his purpose and mission in life that studies technology, lifts up first generation and marginalized students, and surrounds everything with an attitude of gratitude. Joe will share the opportunities and challenges in higher education IT, his new role as the chair of the NASPA Technology Knowledge Community and why he is still active on Pokemon Go. More about Joe

Joe Sabado is the Executive Director for Student Information Systems and Technology (SIS&T) and the Associate Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the Division of Student Affairs at UC Santa Barbara. He is a member of the UCSB Student Affairs Executive Group, IT Council (ITC), and the CIO Council. He graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 1997 with a BA in Political Science and a minor in Asian American Studies and received his MBA with specialization in Information Technology Management in 2016 from Capella University.

Joe is also the NASPA Technology Knowledge Community (TKC) Chair. The TKC provides its members a venue to explore and collaborate within the topic of technology through discussions, research, and the distribution of information about technology. In his IT roles at UCSB, Joe is responsible for leading a team of 65 software developers, engineers, designers, and business analysts, including 10 managers/directors of teams that provide information systems to the Enrollment Services, Graduate Division, and the Student Services Clusters. He oversees more than 150 information systems/websites for more than 22 departments ranging from registration systems, academic records, financial aid, academic advising, electronic medical records, admissions, and outreach. Joe describes himself as an advocate for student success using technology, as an educator, and a mentor.

His commitment to students extend beyond his IT role and includes different roles at UCSB. He is the staff advisor for the National Society for Leadership and Success (NSLS), Kapatirang Pilipino, and Pilipino Cultural Night. He is also a mentor for the NASPA Undergraduate Fellowship Program (NUFP). Throughout his career at UCSB, Joe has been a First-Year Experience (Frosh/Transfer) discussion leader, EOP Summer Transitional Enrichment Program (STEP), panelists and presenters at several UCSB conferences and programs sharing career advice, social media, and mobile development.

Joe has also presented on the topics of digital reputation, personal learning networks, and professional development using social media, and information technology at NASPA regional and national conferences as well as through online webinars.

Rebekah Tilley is the assistant vice president of communication and marketing for the University of Iowa Center for Advancement (UICA). In that role she supports fundraising and alumni engagement efforts for the university, including its CASE Gold winning Iowa Magazine, and serves UICA in a variety of strategic communication efforts.

Previously she was the director of strategic communication for the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business, and the director of communication for the University of Kentucky College of Law. She is a Kentucky native and a proud alum of the University of Kentucky.
