All in for #ACPA15

Tampa2015OL385x118This week kicks off ACPA’s National Convention in Tampa, Florida.  Call for programs closed in September and I thought, well let’s really go for this.  Submit every session idea that I believed in.  I went all in.  Well, I got what I wished for and as a result I’m presenting SEVEN sessions!

I’m even more excited to be presenting with a number of amazing colleagues – from talking about blogging in student affairs to social media research methods.

Social {Media} Change Model: Remixing Theory for Digital Practice

Are college students prepared to be leaders online, using social media for social good? Looking at leadership literature and current practices, a gap exists in how to develop students to be agents of change using digital communication tools such as social media. This session will present how educators can adapt the Social Change Model to reflect and apply digital competencies to their practice, leadership curriculum and programming. Constructs of Digital Leadership will also be explored from the work of Erik Qualman. Attendees will also learn the presenters proposed 10 Digital Student Leader Competencies.

 What Grad School Didn’t Teach You About Your Digital Life

Did your graduate program teach you about your professional digital stamp? What is the balance between sharing personal and professional information online. This session will provide an overview of trends in establishing professional identities online and explore the debates of branding, authenticity and TMI. Specific strategies, concrete examples and tools will be presented that will help you understand how your are viewed online and how you can influence these results.

Social and digital technologies allow everyone to put their ideas out into the world. Blogging and establishing an online presence are an excellent way to engage in professional conversations and idea generation throughout the year. In this session, a panel of bloggers at various stages of experience will share their thoughts about the what, how and why of blogging and how you can start or enhance your own writing.

Student Leaders Navigating the Digital Age

Snapchat into what student leadership is Instagrammed like in the Facebook-Age. This session will share the findings of a dissertation that sought out over 30 student leaders, exploring their experiences and perceptions of social media. The study will show how these student leaders are uniquely using digital communication tools, such as Instagram and Facebook, but also Snapchat and Tumblr. Come learn how these leaders are navigating the complex and complicated digital age.

This panel presentation brings together four emerging researchers studying the implications of social media and digital technology on higher education and student affairs practice. Each researcher is completing dissertation work and will present initial findings from their research and implications for practice in student affairs. This session will also address research design issues in social media research, moderated by a leading scholar in the field, along with audience question and answer.

What would a leader in student affairs tweet? Social media use by students is skyrocketing, challenging educators to meet them where they are. At the same time, student affairs professionals can be found online engaging on campus and beyond. To explore this phenomenon, this session will present study findings from the presenters’ research that explored sixteen senior-level higher education administrators and their leadership practices online. Attendees will receive a leadership framework and digital decision-making model based upon the study results.

About Consider. Collaborate. Create. Commit. The landscape of higher education is changing before our eyes and in 2015 we will recognize many important anniversaries and landmarks, such as the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the upcoming reauthorization of the Higher Education Opportunity Act.

The ACPA 2015 Tampa Annual Convention seeks to create a space for participants to consider our practice and role in the changing higher education landscape while reinforcing our enduring values and professional growth. The convention will provide opportunities to collaborate and strengthen internal and external partnerships to advance student success. Through an intentionally developed curriculum featuring exceptional practices and a published conference proceedings, we hope that participants will create connections with inquiry and action. Further, we hope attendees will commit to establishing and renewing professional networks and friendships in Tampa and beyond.

Assistant Vice President, University of Iowa Center for Advancement

Rebekah Tilley is the assistant vice president of communication and marketing for the University of Iowa Center for Advancement (UICA). In that role she supports fundraising and alumni engagement efforts for the university, including its CASE Gold winning Iowa Magazine, and serves UICA in a variety of strategic communication efforts.

Previously she was the director of strategic communication for the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business, and the director of communication for the University of Kentucky College of Law. She is a Kentucky native and a proud alum of the University of Kentucky.
