Higher Ed Social Media Directories

College and University TikTok Directory

I love to explore how the field of higher education is using social media. I specifically explored TikTok in an article, TikTok is Going to College.

It has been widely shared, so I created this form to crowdsource a list of Colleges/Universities that have a presence on TikTok AND include advice and goals, so other higher ed marketers could learn from eachother.

Higher Education Professionals Instagram Directory

I’ve worked in higher education since 2003, around the same time social media platforms were born. I logged on early to platforms like Twitter and Facebook, open to connecting with friends but also colleagues across the country.

My online connections with my higher ed connections have turned into strong, loyal, and very real relationships IRL.

Instagram Hashtags for Higher Ed Pros

So what’s the real deal with hashtags Instagram? Are the same hashtags being used to build community on Twitter the same for Instagram? Do they serve the same purpose? Instagram’s new feature where you can “follow” specific hashtags and anything posted with that hashtag shows up on your timeline just like a user’s account. This means that there is a lot of room for community building on Instagram.   What if higher education professionals began to use Instagram hashtags like we really did in the early days of Twitter…to find and support each other!

Last year, I published the 20 Higher Education Presidents to follow on Instagram. In the post, I shared about the huge opportunity for Higher Ed Presidents to bring a personal touch to their presidency by sharing interesting content on their own Instagram accounts. Less than a year later, the Pew Research Center is reporting in …

Tweet the Veep: 30 Vice Presidents to Follow on Twitter

Over the last year, I have researched and written plenty about college and university presidents on social media. But it was actually higher education vice presidents and deans that first got my attention back in 2011. Even years ago I noticed that vice presidents, especially in student affairs, that were tweeting, blogging and integrating Twitter …

20 Higher Education Presidents to Follow on Instagram

Why Higher Education Presidents Should Be on Instagram Last month, I updated my list of Higher Education Presidents to follow on Twitter. One of the major things I noticed while compiling that list was how powerful photo and video tweets were in telling a community’s story. College presidents are outpacing executives in their use of …

Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other

By Sherry Turkle

“Technology has become the architect of our intimacies. Online, we fall prey to the illusion of companionship, gathering thousands of Twitter and Facebook friends and confusing tweets and wall posts with authentic communication. But, as MIT technology and society specialist Sherry Turkle argues, this relentless connection leads to a new solitude. As technology ramps up, our emotional lives ramp down. Alone Together is the result of Turkle’s nearly fifteen-year exploration of our lives on the digital terrain. Based on hundreds of interviews, it describes new unsettling relationships between friends, lovers, parents, and children, and new instabilities in how we understand privacy and community, intimacy, and solitude.”

Groundswell, Expanded and Revised Edition: Winning in a World Transformed by Social Technologies

By Dan Zaiontz

"Corporate executives struggle to harness the power of social technologies. Twitter, Facebook, blogs, YouTube are where customers discuss products and companies, write their own news, and find their own deals but how do you integrate these activities into your broader marketing efforts? It’s an unstoppable groundswell that affects every industry — yet it’s still utterly foreign to most companies running things now.

When consumers you’ve never met are rating your company’s products in public forums with which you have no experience or influence, your company is vulnerable. In Groundswell, Josh Bernoff and Charlene Li explain how to turn this threat into an opportunity."

It's Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens

By Dana Boyd

“What is new about how teenagers communicate through services such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram? Do social media affect the quality of teens’ lives? In this eye-opening book, youth culture and technology expert danah boyd uncovers some of the major myths regarding teens’ use of social media. She explores tropes about identity, privacy, safety, danger, and bullying. Ultimately, boyd argues that society fails young people when paternalism and protectionism hinder teenagers’ ability to become informed, thoughtful, and engaged citizens through their online interactions. Yet despite an environment of rampant fear-mongering, boyd finds that teens often find ways to engage and to develop a sense of identity.”

By Tara Mohr

"A groundbreaking women’s leadership expert and popular conference speaker gives women the practical skills to voice and implement the changes they want to see—in themselves and in the world

In her coaching and programs for women, Tara Mohr saw how women were “playing small” in their lives and careers, were frustrated by it, and wanted to “play bigger.” She has devised a proven way for them to achieve their dreams by playing big from the inside out. Mohr’s work helping women play bigger has earned acclaim from the likes of Maria Shriver and Jillian Michaels, and has been featured on the Today show, CNN, and a host of other media outlets.

Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In gave many women new awareness about what kinds of changes they need to make to become more successful; yet most women need help implementing them. In the tradition of Brené Brown’s Daring Greatly, Playing Big provides real, practical tools to help women quiet self-doubt, identify their callings, “unhook” from praise and criticism, unlearn counterproductive good girl habits, and begin taking bold action."

"The inspiring, life-changing bestseller by the author of LEADERS EAT LAST and TOGETHER IS BETTER.

In 2009, Simon Sinek started a movement to help people become more inspired at work, and in turn inspire their colleagues and customers. Since then, millions have been touched by the power of his ideas, including more than 28 million who’ve watched his TED Talk based on START WITH WHY — the third most popular TED video of all time.

Sinek starts with a fundamental question: Why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential, and more profitable than others? Why do some command greater loyalty from customers and employees alike? Even among the successful, why are so few able to repeat their success over and over?"

The Engaged Leader: A Strategy for Your Digital Transformation

By Charlene Li

"NYT and WSJ bestselling author Charlene Li guides business leaders deeper than ever before into the uncomfortable and ever-changing terrain of the digital era.

Technology has revolutionized the very idea and nature of relationships between leaders and their followers. Yet, many leaders remain stuck at arms-length from those they lead and serve, relying on specialized teams to interact with customers, their direct reports to keep tabs on how employees are doing, and on the digital natives in their organization to stay abreast of new technologies.

Now, in The Engaged Leader: A Strategy for Your Digital Transformation, Li helps leaders adapt to the demands, and opportunities of digital leadership. To be a true digital leader requires a metamorphosis: you must connect directly by listening, sharing, and engaging using digital technologies. This metamorphosis is not easy, comfortable, or painless—if your palms aren’t sweaty or your stomach isn’t churning, then you probably aren’t really practicing digital leadership."
