But still, Mary is human. She spoke about struggling with overcommitment or working endless hours in one day. She talked about trying to get better at knowing when she has done enough for one day. “I feel really good on a day I upload or finishing shooting something. But most days end with me thinking I didn’t do enough, that I could do more.” Alas the daily balance of accomplishment with self-care.
And there is much more Mary has in mind going forward. She hopes to amp up her Mary Doodles channel, along with collaborations with other YouTubers. She also has children and comic book ideas. The video below is her most recent production, called A Very Rare Panda Bear:
If this is the first you have heard of Mary, I hope this post has inspired you to get know her more, if not in person then online. Her cheer and encouragement in all forms is contagious. I was extremely proud of her, when in January she was awarded a Streamy, an award given to honor excellence in video programming. She specifically was awarded ‘Best Use of Fashion & Design.’
Mary is one of the few Doers in this series that takes on the “Art of Doing” literally. Beyond the canvas, her approach to life-like Forrest Gump is refreshing.
She closed our interview with the following advice, “Always be willing to say yes to opportunities, even if it leads you to a dead-end you got that experience. Or fizzle fat.” The mix of the fact with funnies, (and little sugar and spice) that is what Mary Doodles is made of.

Digital Leadership Grew Up. Now What?
In July of 2014, I published my first list of higher education presidents to follow. I had been studying campus leaders and social media for about a year. Almost no research existed yet. There were no best practices, no playbook, no one telling a chancellor it was okay to be authentic online. So I started ...

In higher education, July 1 isn’t the middle of anything. It’s the start of everything. It’s a new budget cycle, with new goals, and just a short window before fall swallows the calendar whole.
