The 30-Day Member Engagement Challenge

If you work with an association, you know the feeling: engagement is something everyone wants more of, but building momentum can feel like a heavy lift.

New campaigns take time. Major initiatives require planning. And with limited staff and competing priorities, it’s easy for engagement efforts to stall.

But momentum doesn’t always come from big moves. Often, it starts with small, visible actions repeated consistently.

That’s the idea behind the 30-Day Association Engagement Challenge, a simple framework designed to help associations boost reach, visibility, and member interaction using tools you already have.

No new platforms. No complex campaign development. Just practical steps that celebrate your members and spark conversation — in just four weeks.

Week 1: Celebration and Recognition

Associations are communities first and foremost. One of the most meaningful ways to generate engagement is to highlight the people who make your organization strong.

A Member Spotlight series is a simple, straightforward way to produce shareable stories. Members often reshare posts that feature them or people they know, expanding your association’s organic reach.

Aim to post two member spotlights on social media during your challenge. Here’s an easy template you can use to create these posts:

Member Spotlight 🌟

Meet [Name], [Title] at [Organization], and a member of the [Association Name] community for [Length of Time]. We asked a few questions to get to know [him/her/them] better.

Q: What’s top-of-mind for you right now when you think about the [Your Field] industry?
A: [Response]

Q: What is your favorite part of [Association Name] membership?
A: [Response]

Q: What is one piece of advice you would share with others in your profession?
A: [Response]

Q: What is one resource (a book, a tool, a podcast, etc.) that has helped you recently?
A: [Response]

This type of post is quick to produce and reinforces something powerful: associations thrive because of their members.

Want to make launching your Member Spotlight series even easier?

Download our Member Spotlight Email Template — a simple message you can send to members you’d like to feature. It includes a warm invitation and the short questions needed to quickly gather responses for your social media posts. Start spotlighting your members today.

(Pro Tip: Using a tool like Google Forms or Qualtrics can streamline collection of Q&A responses, but a standard email reply works great, too!)

Week 2: Surface Valuable Resources

Most associations have years of valuable content — webinars, reports, toolkits, and conference session recordings — but much of it gets buried after its initial release.

Instead of creating something new, use this week to bring valuable resources back into the spotlight.

Choose two existing pieces of content and promote them across your channels. This could include:

  • A webinar recording
  • A research report
  • A professional toolkit
  • A blog post
  • A conference session recording
  • A podcast episode

Focus your messaging on why the resource is helpful now. A short social post or newsletter callout can reintroduce a helpful resource to members who may have missed it the first time.

A screengrab from a fictitious email callout box reads

Week 3: Start Conversations

Engagement grows when members feel invited to participate, not just consume content.

One of the easiest ways to encourage interaction is by asking a thoughtful question. Try posting one conversation-starting question, such as:

  • What trend in your field is getting the most attention right now?
  • What skill(s) do emerging professionals need most today?
  • What tool or strategy has been most helpful in your work recently?

You can use formats like:

  • LinkedIn polls
  • Instagram Stories polls
  • Simple question posts
A screengrab from a fictitious LinkedIn post reads "What has been helpful in your work recently? We're always curious what's actually working for today's professionals—beyond the trends and buzzwords. Which of these has made the biggest impact for you lately? [Poll] What tool or strategy has been most helpful for you? Options: Email marketing campaigns, Social media engagement strategies, Member data / analytics tools, AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, automation)

You may be surprised at what you learn about your members — and the conversations that get started in the comments section.

Week 4: Optimize What You Already Have

The final week of the challenge focuses on strengthening the engagement habits that sustain community over time.

Start by creating a “Did You Know?” post highlighting a lesser-known member benefit, program, or resource.

Many members don’t realize the full value their association provides. Short posts like these can remind members about opportunities such as:

  • Volunteer roles or leadership pathways
  • Access to exclusive research or industry data
  • Professional development libraries
  • Networking communities or directories

Next, commit to actively engaging with your audience. Instead of simply posting content, take time to respond to your community.

This week, reply to at least five comments on your social media posts.

These small interactions signal that your association is listening and encourage members to engage more often.

Putting It All Together:
Your 30-Day Engagement Challenge Checklist

Over the next 30 days, aim to complete the following:

✔ Post 2 Member Spotlights on social media

Resurface 2 valuable resources from your archive

✔ Ask one conversation-starting question

✔ Create a “Did You Know?” post highlighting member benefits

Reply to at least 5 comments on your social media posts

Individually, these actions are simple. Together, they create a steady rhythm of visibility, recognition, and conversation.

And that’s exactly how engagement grows.

Give the 30-Day Engagement Challenge a try — start small, stay consistent, and see where momentum builds. We’d love to hear what works for your team and your members.

Digital Leadership Grew Up. Now What?

In July of 2014, I published my first list of higher education presidents to follow. I had been studying campus leaders and social media for about a year. Almost no research existed yet. There were no best practices, no playbook, no one telling a chancellor it was okay to be authentic online. So I started ...
